Over 200, 000 residents of Omoku in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) in Rivers State, who fled their homes due to the flood that submerged the streets and communities in the area, now live in fear of reoccurrence.
Some of the residents who spoke with Scan News said the flood came when the Orashi River overflow its bank and entered the Omoku city covering Obohia street, Commissioner road, Akorita street, Dan street, among others.
The residents complained that the surprise flood swept into their houses destroying properties and means of livelihood.
They therefore called on the Federal and Rivers State Government to assist in evacuating and providing food and temporary accommodation to the displaced citizens of Omoku.
In his effort, the member representing ONELGA Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Gift Nwokocha , who visited the area, had called for urgent government assistance to the people.
The lawmaker who had financially assisted some of the stranded constituents in paying for vehicles to convey their properties to safer places also urged governments for assistance in transporting the fleeing persons.
Meanwhile, the residents are not only in fear of flood but also of snakes and other reptiles.
Some of the residents who further spoke to Scan News said about seven persons are hospitalized at Omoku General Hospital for snake bite. They complained that snakes sacked by the flood have forced themselves to the city causing harm to the people.
It would be recalled that recently over 500, 000 residents were displaced at the Ahoada West flood, also in Rivers State.
The residents of the State are now seeking for solution to stop the on going flood disaster, in fear that if nothing is done could cause more damages, even loss lives.
