Senators Ndume, Zenna and Ali Modu Sherif have variously been in the news for alleged involvement in the sponsorship of the terrorist activities of the Boko Haram sect.
Abubakar made this disclosure yesterday during the opening ceremony of a two-day workshop for officers of the Criminal Investigation Departments (CID) of the zonal, state, divisional and area commands. He said the police were still gathering information in order to prosecute them.
The IG, who lamented that they were not getting enough information to bring the senators to book, called on Nigerians with information about the sponsors of terrorism to avail the police of such information.
“We are doing so much about it, looking for evidences. We are investigating, but please anybody who has evidence about that, we need help because you cannot take anybody to court without a preponderance of evidence. All those people you are talking about, yes, they are under watch, we are investigating but we need assistance.
“This is part of what this seminar will discuss. We need evidences to prosecute their cases. There is no imaginary evidence; things do not happen from the blues. They must be realistic and there must be preponderance of evidence before we can prosecute anybody,” he said.
Reacting to an allegation that the police were sleeping on the investigation of House of Representatives member Farouk Lawan over alleged bribery scam, Abubakar said the case would be wrapped up and prosecution follow as soon there was enough evidence.
“No, it’s not infinito. Investigation is ongoing. If you follow the case properly, you can see that the investigation is on and there are other factors that we have to key in for us to complete the investigation. As soon as we complete the investigation. We’ll do what is right and ensure that prosecution takes place,” he said.
Senator Zanna Sues FG, claims N5b damages
Senator Ahmad Zannah representing Borno Central senatorial district has asked an Abuja high court to direct the federal government to pay him N5 billion for damages he suffered when it maliciously announced to the public and the whole world that one of the commanders of the Boko Haram sect, Shuaibu Bama, was arrested in his house.
Zanna had listed the minister of defence, the chief of defence staff, the attorney-general of the federation and Lt. Col. Sagir Musa as co-defendants.
In his statement of claims, Zanna averred that Musa had on October 9, as the spokesman of the Joint Task Force, at a press conference said that the Boko Haram commander was arrested in a serving senator’s house along Damboa Road, GRA, Maiduguri.
He said that Musa’s statement was reported in both print and electronic media, knowing full well that the words referred and were understood to refer to him by the general public.
He said it is a known fact that he is the only serving senator who has a house along Damboa Road, GRA, Maiduguri.
He added that the public was misled that he harboured a wanted Boko Haram terror suspect in his house and is therefore a supporter of the terrorist group. Among others, he claimed:
“That the publication complained of falsely portrayed him as one of the persons who aid and support the Boko Haram in their terrorist activities.
“That the plaintiff who has always publicly condemned the destructive activities of the Boko Haram is a hypocrite.
“That the publication complained of was calculated to disparage the plaintiff and to lower his estimation in the eyes of the public and, in fact, the plaintiff’s reputation has been seriously damaged by the words complained of.
“The plaintiff has also suffered considerable distress, mental trauma, shock and embarrassment as a consequence of the defendants’ conduct and has suffered loss and damages.”
No date has been set aside for hearing as the suit is yet to be assigned to any judge.
