Just some moments after Brazil’s embarrassing 7-1 defeat by Germany, Brazilian captain David Luiz was in tears. " Moments of sorrowful thoughts filled his heart"
Standing in the center of the pitch in Belo Horizonte it was as if Luiz, Brazil’s stand-in captain for the day in Thiago Silva’s absence, had just had his heart ripped out.
Paris Saint-Germain’s defender was lost for words.
In between his sobs and trying to wipe away tears from his eyes the Brazilian skipper had the following message to send to the people of the host nation.
Heart felt and full of raw emotion, Luiz sent his apologies to the Brazilian public.
“I am sorry for the Brazilian people,” Luiz said. “The team, we wanted to make them happy. We wanted to do this for the people who have suffered so much in Brazil. We wanted to make you happy in the World Cup but we couldn't do it.”
Before this match many had tabbed Germany as the favorites to make the final but nobody expected the complete demolition job they carried out. Luiz and his fellow Brazilian defenders stood pedestrian as Germany’s attacker ran rings around them.
The naive defending from Brazil players played perfectly into Germany’s hands and no matter how many tears Luiz cries, it will take him and his teammates a long time to recover from such a damaging defeat.
An entire nation was behind Brazil as they made it to the semifinals. Then, whether it was the intense pressure, poor play, Absence of Neymar and Thiago Silver or just that German were much better on the day, everything combined to conspire against the hosts.
What a pitiable defeat.
