Smoke and ash rise from the Calbuco volcano in southern Chile. |
It has been over 42 years since the last time they witnessed such eruptions and after keeping cool for more than 42 years, a massive Calbuco volcano in southern Chile erupted twice on Wednesday, this lead to the evacuation of 1,500 inhabitants, the spread of a huge ash cloud and the constant sharing of awesome eruption pictures on social media.
No injuries or death were reported after the double eruption of the 6,500-foot volcano, which is considered one of Chile’s most potentially dangerous occurrences.
According to Alejandro Verges, the regional emergency director of the Los Lagos region where the epic eruptions happened. “For us it was a surprise,”
No hot rocks or lava were seen in the hours after the explosion, only massive blankets of ash across the tiny mountain area, authorities said.
The Chilean government is sending police and military officers to ensure the safety of those
evacuated, and also sending water in case any resources were contaminated by the ash.
The area around the volcano is sparsely populated and about 620 miles south of Santiago, Chile’s capital. Witnesses said the eruption could be seen from almost 30 miles away.
Before now, another volcano in southern Chile termed Villarica, erupted last month which also led to the evacuation of thousands.
