the inauguration of Egypt's new president was supposed to be a great event but unfortunately, the event was marred by sexual assaults on a girl in Tahrir square during celebrations.
There were outrage spikes over the incident especially after releasing a graphic video on the social media sites showing naked bruised women in in Tahrir Square surrounded by men and one policeman trying to get her away from unruly crowd. Althogh, similar incidents have been on the rise in large political gatherings over the past 2 years what have propelled youth groups to form teams to help victims on the ground.None of those groups were operating during the celebrations because of the heavy presence of police and army, who manned the gates but had little control on the situation inside the square.
Women's rights groups have been calling on the government to tackle the issue of sexual harassment and assault on Egyptian streets for years. A new amendment made to the law recently issued harsher sentences against perpetrators but activists say the law is not enough and that the government needs to issue a holistic plan to tackle the phenomenon with awareness campaigns across the board of government institutions. On another front, Egypt's Sisi visited the rape victim and offered an apology saying that he has asked he country’s security and legal bodies not to allow this to happen again.The gravity of incidents reported and the lasted video has put sexual harassment on the forefront of the issues that has to be tackled by the new president amid widespread demands of an inclusive strategy to put an end, once and for all, to the problem that plagues the lives of the women in Egypt.
